Fortunately, in Colombia, indigenous people have many rights, and thus this river and its surrounding area are under the supervision of the local community. The community has closed off the river from the estuary upwards, and any activity above this point requires their permission. It is prohibited to kill any trophy fish, and fishing is only allowed with a guide from the community, who also speak the local indigenous language in addition to Spanish. The campsite is located deep in the Colombian wilderness, a 6-hour boat ride from the last settlement and civilization.
