Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
**Which month is ideal for fishing?**
At the start of the season, more trophy fish are caught, but the first month tends to have more variable weather, often being rainier and cooler. Always check the individually set fishing seasons for the tours.
**What clothing should I bring?**
It depends on the month and the tour, but generally, it’s advisable to bring lightweight and quick-drying long-sleeve shirts, trousers, a hat, a mask, and gloves—preferably with insect protection. Comfortable hiking shoes that are lightweight and quick-drying, as well as quick-drying hiking socks, are recommended. A raincoat or poncho might also be needed at any time.
**What vaccinations do I need?**
Due to Colombia’s tropical location, a yellow fever vaccination might be necessary, especially if visiting the Amazon jungle—though it’s not mandatory. However, it is required for entry into Bolivia. In Brazil, no mandatory vaccinations are needed unless the traveler is coming from or traveling through a yellow fever-endemic country (such as Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Venezuela, or several African countries). In such cases, the yellow fever vaccination is mandatory, and proof is strictly checked (yellow vaccination book). Without it, travelers may be denied entry into the country. Always consult with your doctor regarding necessary or recommended vaccinations. Please note that Golden Dorado Travel cannot provide any medical recommendations.
**Is Colombia safe?**
The country has made great strides in terms of safety. Since the historic peace agreement, the security situation has greatly improved. Many areas that were once off-limits are now visited by international tourists. In major cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, and Cali, one should be cautious and use common sense, as in any major city around the world.
**Is Bolivia safe?**
Santa Cruz de la Sierra is safe, but it’s best to avoid using mobile phones, handling cash, or wearing jewelry in public places. The fishing locations and the routes leading there are absolutely safe.
**Is it worth spending extra time in Colombia beyond fishing?**
Yes, we are partnered with two travel agencies if you’re interested in exploring the country’s culture, gastronomy, cities, or even just a coffee tour.
**What is Colombia’s currency, and where can I exchange USD for pesos?**
The official currency of Colombia is the Colombian peso (COP). One USD is approximately 4000 COP, but it’s advisable to check the current exchange rate. If you’re carrying cash and want to exchange USD, euros, or any other major currency for pesos, you can do so at designated currency exchange offices called "casa de cambio." It’s advisable not to exchange money at the airport (or only exchange enough for a taxi to the hotel), as the high demand generally results in less favorable exchange rates.
**What is Bolivia’s currency?**
BOB, also known as the boliviano, often referred to as peso. It’s not advisable to exchange currency due to unfavorable rates caused by the economic situation; it’s more economical to withdraw money using a bank card.
**Will I need cash?**
Souvenirs and handmade goods often can only be purchased with cash (local currency, not dollars or euros), and in smaller towns or rural areas, bank cards are often not accepted.
**Can I pay by card at restaurants in Colombia/Bolivia?**
Yes, reputable restaurants, chain stores, and supermarkets generally accept bank cards.
**Is it safe to take taxis?**
It’s not recommended; using Uber is preferable.
**Do the guides speak English?**
No, and generally, few people in South America speak languages other than Spanish, especially in rural areas.
**Are there any dangerous animals at the fishing locations?**
Always be cautious when moving around in nature; avoid going into bushes or forests without a guide and refrain from touching them with your hands.
**Are domestic flights or South American airlines safe?**
Yes, they are.
**Is tap water drinkable?**
No, tap water is generally not potable in almost all of Latin America.
